Did Cervantes’s family have Jewish roots?

The following article by Marion Fischel examines the age old question regarding Miguel Cervantes family background.

His masterpiece, Don Quixote includes references to Limpieza de Sangre – Purity of Blood (from Jewish or Moorish origins) which had originated in the middle of the 15th century. Whatever his background, it indicates that Cervantes was certainly aware of the challenges that descendants of New Christians continued to face in the 16th century.
