Bringing Together and Educating Descendants of Sephardic Conversos
In many ways, Dr. Stanley Hordes is the pioneer of modern day research into the world of Crypto-Judaism. I have had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Hordes in person several times. I remember one of my first academic presentations on the topic of Conversos was directly after Dr. Hordes lecture. It was a little intimidating, but he was very encouraging.
His seminal work, To the End of the Earth: A History of the Crypto-Jews of New Mexico provides an extensive review of Spanish Jewish history in Spain and Converso settlement into New Spain.
What I have appreciated about Dr. Hordes is that his academic research does not fully reflect his greater concern for descendants of Anusim. He is genuinely concerned about those individuals searching out their past and has even taken what some deemed as controversial positions in defending the openness of the Society of Crypto-Judaic Studies to all people regardless of background.
Anyone interested in Crypto-Jewish history in the area of New Mexico as well as generallay history of Converso settlement should consider adding To the End of the Earth: A History of the Crypto-Jews of New Mexico to their library.
