The focuses on the cases of four individuals arrested by the Inquisition. These are Luis Rodriguez de Carvajal, Diogo d’Asumpcao, Francisco Maldonado de Silva, and Lope de Vera y Alarcon who ultimately chose a road to martyrdom after being arrested by Spanish Inquisitional authorities.
Bodian begins with a brief review of the concept of martyrdom as perceived in ancient and medieval Jewish sources. She also provides a review of the events which created the converso phenomena in the fourteen century. For a complete review, be sure to visit the link.
